Rodwell Road / Avenue junction

August 25, 2011

Rodwell junction (large version)

We appreciate that there have been some difficulties for traffic exiting Rodwell Avenue due to the junction being blocked by vehicles.

This week our traffic signal engineers have carried out some changes to the phasing of the Rodwell Road/Avenue junction to improve traffic flow for vehicles exiting Rodwell Avenue.

Since the changes have been made exiting Rodwell Avenue has improved.

Lane closure

May 13, 2011

Tomorrow one lane will be closed on Boot Hill on the approach to Harbour Crossroads while posts for a variable message sign (VMS) are installed.

The VMS is part of the Weymouth Showcase Scheme, which will also provide car park guidance signs and real time information at bus stops.

Once installed, the sign on Boot Hill will provide information about the Town Bridge lifting as well as advising motorists of events, delays and safety information.

Buxton Road

April 19, 2011

Following comments from drivers about the long delays on Buxton Road, please find below some information as to why this is:

  • It is only recently that the SCOOT system has been introduced in the Boot Hill corridor, which is the element that links the junctions and allows them to react to traffic flows and learn traffic patterns/behaviour.

Now this system is in operation the corridor should become more responsive, however, the full benefits won’t be seen until all the junction works are complete.

  • The phasing of the Wyke Road junction does mean that northbound drivers will have a quicker journey time using Portland Road and Wyke Road to get onto Boot Hill.

This is why, as part of the Weymouth Transport Package, improvements are being made to the junction by All Saints Church.

The phasing at the Wyke Road junction has allowed the controlled pedestrian crossings to be installed.

Also, because of the narrow road width, if northbound and southbound traffic were to run at the same time a single vehicle wishing to turn right would bring southbound traffic to a standstill.

Rodwell junction

March 2, 2011

Rodwell junction (large version)The final set of signals along the Boot Hill corridor are going live this week.

The new Rodwell junction will be switched on during Thursday afternoon, depending on the outcome of the testing of the signals.

With these last set of signals live, work will start later this month to link the junctions along the corridor, which will make them more efficient.

Temporary traffic lights have been at the Rodwell Avenue junction with Rodwell Road since Boot Hill was made one-way for the improvement work to be carried out.

Harbour Crossroads going live

January 26, 2011

During Friday 28 January the signals at Harbour Crossroads will go live.

Next week, traffic engineers will be closely observing the signals and making adjustments as necessary and over the coming months the two new junctions will be monitored to ensure they are working together.

Junction improvement work has also finished on Boot Hill, and over the next few weeks these junctions will also be ‘commissioned’ by Siemens.

Chickerell Road and Wyke Road will remain one-way at their junction with Boot Hill until their signals are switched on.

Boot Hill incident

January 17, 2011

Lorry on Boot Hill (large version)

At around 9.25am yesterday a six-wheel tipper lorry experienced problems while discharging the last 11 tonnes of material for surfacing.

Rodwell Road was closed by emergency services while the lorry was stabilised and had its load removed by a digger.

The road was reopened at around 2.30pm after the vehicle had been able to drive away.

A full investigation is now being carried out by Hanson’s Panel of Inquiry.

Boot Hill and Harbour traffic management

January 5, 2011

Work will continue in the Boot Hill and Harbour Junction area over the weekend, with Harbour Junction closed 6pm Sunday 9 January to 6am Monday 10 January.

The diversion route will be along Granby Way – Chickerell Link Road – Chickerell Road – Lanehouse Rocks Road – Portland Road – Buxton Road – Rodwell Road.

On Monday 10 January, Boot Hill will revert back to the one-way system which was in place last year, with Hope Square also one-way for local traffic.

The cold weather has put this work behind programme and to get it completed as soon as possible workers need greater access to the area.

There will also be three-way temporary traffic lights at Harbour Junction. These measures will be put in place before the Monday morning peak traffic and will last 14 days – to Monday 24 January.

Work left to do on Harbour Junction & Boot Hill

December 20, 2010

Harbour Junction artists impression (large version)In January work will restart on Harbour Junction and on Boot Hill.

The junctions were originally programmed to be completed by Christmas but the extreme cold weather prevented essential work such as concrete pouring and tarmac laying to take place.

The remaining work includes:

  • Building last traffic island at Harbour Junction
  • Installing and testing signals at Harbour Junction
  • Surfacing of Harbour Junction
  • Installing and testing new signals at Rodwell Avenue junction
  • Installing and testing new signals at Wyke Road junction
  • Finishing pedestrian island near Chickerell Road junction
  • Installing and testing new signals at Chickerell Road junction
  • Complete additional drainage and surfacing from Rodwell Avenue to Buxton Road
  • Surfacing Boot Hill, including entrance to Rodwell Avenue, Wyke Road and Chickerell Road

Due to the weather the site will shut down for the Christmas break from today, Monday 20 December. The site will reopen on Tuesday 4 January 2011.

The visitors centre will reopen on Thursday 6 January 2011.

Boot Hill

December 7, 2010

Boot Hill will reopen to two-way traffic on Thursday 9 December, but work will continue on the junctions.

This means that Wyke Road will need to be closed at its junction with Boot Hill to ensure the safety of motorists and workers. There will also be times when Chickerell Road is closed.

Despite working double shifts to stay on programme the extreme weather has prevented essential work from taking place, which means that the Boot Hill junctions and Harbour Junction will go live in the New Year.
