Signal fault

There are currently faults in the detection equipment at Harbour Crossroads, which is causing delays in the area.

Resurfacing overnight damaged six sensors in the middle of the junction. This means that the signals are giving the longest time of safety clearance (all red) after each phase of the junction.

The right turn into North Quay from Boot Hill is also affected; giving the minimum green time and working intermittently.

Siemens will be on site tonight and tomorrow morning to repair and reconnect the detection equipment.

Drivers are being advised to use alternative routes wherever possible.

Why weren’t the people concerned with the resurfacing told about the location of the sensors. Is this going to happen every time roads near ‘intelligent’ traffic lights are re-surfaced. Perhaps a plaque should be placed above the sensor marked ‘ This plaque marks the grave of a sensor as a memorial to the loss of one of Weymouth’s roundabouts’.

      Hi Terry,

We were aware of where the sensors were, unfortunately on this occasion the shallow depth of the sensors was a surprise.

It was unclear exactly which sensors had been damaged until the junction was monitored from the control room on Tuesday morning and an engineer was sent to site to investigate.

  2. Stephen Jones Says:

Hmmm. Please tell us that the control system failed ‘safely’ on this occasion.

PS I’d love to try an alternative route, but I live nearby.

      Hi Stephen,

The control system did not fail, it was six sensors in the road which help the junction work more efficiently and meant that a lot more ‘red’ time was given.

This is why there were long delays in the area yesterday.

  3. Ian Farmer Says:

Hopefully the firm that did the resurfacing is paying for this extra work, with a penalty fee to the local council for the extra hassle caused to the locals!!!

      Hi Ian,

Yes, the contractor is meeting the cost of the remedial works and this repair work.
