Portland Road / Wyke Road junction

Portland Road junction with Wyke Road (large version)As part of the transport package project, improvements are being made to the Portland Road junction with Wyke Road (cemetery junction).

Changes are needed at this junction as a result of changes at the Wyke Road junction with Rodwell Road – some northbound traffic will naturally re-routed along Wyke Road towards Rodwell Road (Boot Hill), or down Lanehouse Rocks Road.

To assist this, and ensure that the route becomes a viable alternative, cemetery junction must be improved.

Roundabouts rule OK. Was this part of the Transport Package, or an afterthought when you realised what a hash had been made of the other changes. The removal of the mini roundabout on Boot Hill and the banning of left turns into Wyke Rd or Chickeral Rd, and the removal of right turns from the same onto Boot Hill will force people on ‘rat-runs’ through Everest Rd or Crossways.
Perhaps you could also be clearer when this additional work will commence and how long will it take.

      Hi Doug,

This junction was designed at the same time as the transport package junctions.

As stated on the web page, the mini-roundabout scheme is an interim solution and will be constructed later this year – most likely shortly after the Lanehouse/Lynch Road work has finished.

The reason this junction needs improving is to move traffic off the ‘rat runs’ by making the Portland Road/Wyke Road junction more efficient as the phasing of the Wyke Road signals aims to distribute local traffic evenly between Buxton Road, Wyke Road and Lanehouse Rocks Road.

You lot at DCC really have lost the plot.

If there is one junction where for safety either the existing clearly identified set of priorities is required to be left alone or replaced by TLs you are putting in a mini roundabout.

    Please STOP this farce now.

      Hi John,

As described on the scheme web page, a traffic light junction was rejected by the local councillors and residents, so a mini-roundabout is being built as an interim solution.

It is not an option to do nothing at this junction as it needs improving to make it more efficient and a realistic alternative route for northbound traffic as the phasing of the Wyke Road signals aims to distribute local traffic evenly between Buxton Road, Wyke Road and Lanehouse Rocks Road.

I’m not sure that you have given a full answer. I do not recall seeing iit on the information originally published.I do not see what it will do to alleviate the rat runs caused by the restrictive turns on Boot Hill end of Wyke and Chickeral Rd’s. At 11am this morning the current set-up caused me no problems. What I did experience was an unecessary hold up at a red light on the BootHill/Wyke Rd.junction. The lights were green coming down, but red going up. Is this a case of the intelligent traffic lights being a bit stupid.
At 5.30am and 7am on a Saturday, with almost no traffic I was stopped at 3 sets of new lights The Crooks lorry next to me at Westham roundabout was also frustrated by the unecessary halt. A roundabout would have allowed us to continue without stopping . Surely your overall design should have taken this into account.
And finally when will the mini-roundabout work start and how long will it take, and will you put a sensible sized workforce onto it instead of the normal couple of guys that you normally employ, and work longer hours to get the job done quicker.

Quote – As described on the scheme web page, a traffic light junction was rejected by the local councillors and residents, so a mini-roundabout is being built as an interim solution.

I saw that and now see that you again admit a mini-roundabout ISN’t a desirable arrangement, as per my comment.

This junction needs traffic lights. The planners at DCC and WPBC have foisted them on us in many other places such as Easton Square and Weymouth Town Centre despite opposition* but here you are letting NIMBYs rule and are about to put in a junction scheme that by your own admission is not as good as TLs.

Well designed TLs work, everyone knows who goes when, mini-roundabouts on busy roads don’t because you reach a point where all 3 legs have a vehicle waiting so everyone is supposed to be giving way to everyone else!

    * I do know in Easton that was to building Tesco’s in the 1st place not the lights.
