How about extending the underpass across to the beach and making a proper job of it?

    • Weymouth Transport Package Says:

      Hi Terry,

Unfortunately, extending the subway is not possible as a high tide or storm would flood the whole thing including the existing section under King Street.

A subway could be built, but it would need to come up on the promenade and a significant area of the promenade would be lost to the construction of the steps and ramps, and wind blown sand would tend to accumulate in the seaward end.

People are generally reluctant to use subways, due to all the additional walking up and down steps or ramps and when you can see where you want to be just the other side of the road. The creation of a T-shaped subway of significant length with blind corners will be even less attractive.

People generally feel more secure using an open crossing than being in the confines of a subway.

There are currently two crossings of The Esplanade and a third one will be created at the new Esplanade junction.

I’m still a bit confused. If I want to drive from M&S on the Esplanade to the Park District, will I have to go via the harbour / Commercial Road / King Street, or is there some other way?

    • Weymouth Transport Package Says:

      Hi David,

There shouldn’t be much change in the way you travel from M&S to the Park District. When the scheme is complete, you will be able to drive along The Esplanade, across the new junction and down Astrid Way.

To get from the Park District to M&S you will be able to turn right out of Queen Street and head along Commercial Road, up Westham Road and go round the statue. Otherwise, you can go up Astrid Way and turn right to head through the new junction and straight on to M&S.
