Essential bridge maintenance

Swannery Bridge (large version)

Starting on Monday 20 September, Swannery Bridge will be one-way towards the seafront (eastbound) for up to six weeks while it is re-waterproofed.

Traffic, including bus routes, will be able to use the bridge to get into the town centre. Drivers leaving the town centre will be diverted onto the Esplanade, up Dorchester Road to Manor Roundabout and along Weymouth Way.

Town Bridge will remain open to two-way traffic.

As the work is weather dependent, six weeks have been allowed, however, the project team aims to get the work done in three to four weeks.

Swannery Bridge was last waterproofed in 1984, during it’s construction, and is overdue this essential maintenance as waterproofing normally lasts 20 to 25 years.

Read more about the work in the press release.

This, I think, will sum up the local response to this announcement: http://knowyourmeme.com/photos/16593

Are there any plans to resurface the town bridge again soon? It appears that many of the plates are loose and may be in danger of becoming detatched completely !

      Hi Geoff,

We are aware that Town Bridge is in need of essential maintenance and we are currently looking at the best time to schedule this work.

We will publicise the works as soon as a date is set, most likely to be early next year.

I cannot believe that either weymouth or Dorset CC pay any attention to their residents what soever. We now have the swannery bridge reduced to one way and Abbotts bury Rd shut for waterworks on top of an unproven traffic system for the Olympics.
The people who are responsible for this kind of decision making should be removed from office and the councillors should resign . No one in their right mind who is responsible for organising these works should undertake it in such a high handed way with so little time for the residents who are incurring delays to and from work.
It is so obvious that you can’t do all this at any one time .. and why ? for people to make afast buck when the Olympics arrive on our doorstep.
